Project 4: Impact of stakeholder participation on compliance to water management measures

This project focuses on how different stakeholders being members of water councils perceive the EQS system. The analysis will mainly deal with how the water councils have worked in practice.

The aim of the project is to investigate the effects of a number of individual‐level factors such as perception of fairness, (un)certainty and own goal. We will focus on explanatory factors that are derived from previous psychological and public opinion research.

This project proceeds from “the theory of social dilemma”. Social dilemmas are situations in which collective interests are at odds with private interests. The Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom, is one of the researcher that has contributed to the knowledge regarding social dilemmas.

By a survey we will collect data large enough to make relevant statistical breakdowns on various stakeholders segments. We argue that only through understanding these mechanisms and underlying factors it can be possible to line out policy instruments to improve the Swedish EQS system.
